In the video, Christine Bergmeier shows step-by-step how apple strudel with vanilla sauce is made. Here you can find the recipe for apple strudel with a printable version.

Which apples are best?

Regardless of whether you want to bake apple pie from a tray or apple pie in a springform pan – it’s best to use firm, slightly sour apples. The contrast between the sweetness of the dough and the acidity of the apple is what makes a good apple pie. The best apple varieties for baking are, for example, Braeburn, Boskop, Jonagold, Cox Orange or Gala. After peeling and cutting, drizzle the apples immediately with lemon juice so that they do not turn brown and retain their color even after a short period of storage. Lemon also gives the cake an additional fresh note.

What goes into an apple pie?

Fresh apples belong in an apple pie. As wedges, cubes, quarters, whole or as a puree: apples give cakes a fruity note and make them juicy and aromatic. The apples in the cake can be spread over the dough, folded in, covered with an icing, dough lattice or sprinkles or used as applesauce in the dough or in the filling. Depending on the recipe, between 600 g and 1.5 kg are required for an apple cake.

Nuts also go well in apple cake: almonds, hazelnuts or walnuts give the apple cake bite and aroma. Fruity components such as raisins, berries or fruit jams make the apple pie fresh.

What goes with this?

Purists enjoy apple pie just like that. Freshly whipped whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream are often served with it.

Storage of apple pie

Once baked, the cake will last two to three days at room temperature. After cutting, it is best to wrap it with cling film or pack it in a food storage container. It will last about five to six days in the fridge.

Tip: The apple pie tastes particularly delicious if it is briefly warmed up in the oven before eating.

Can it be frozen?

Apple pie can also be frozen. To do this, place the cake in a suitable container and freeze. If necessary, the cake can be defrosted and served immediately.
