Importance of maintenance

“Unbreakable” rule of the kitchen: nothing goes to waste!

People have always applied preservation methods to food to keep it safe for their health and to be able to consume it whenever they want. Maintenance methods are based on various tactics and are therefore varied. Let’s look at the most common ones.

Drying

Dehydration is the oldest method of food preservation and is used for fruits, vegetables, herbs, herbs and meat. For example, if we have a lot of figs from our garden, we can cut them into slices and place them on a tray on the patio table. What is certain is that it does have an effect, but it requires patience and persistence for a good result.

In the market we will find the special machine that will remove the moisture from the food, while preserving its nutrients. Especially if we are lovers of healthy food, this economical and easy maintenance method will provide us with healthy snacks and a variety of options for the office or on the road!

Salting

Another method that has its roots in the distant past is salting. When people wanted to preserve meat and didn’t have the luxury of a refrigerator (or freezer), they used to salt the food to remove moisture, a key factor that favors the growth of microorganisms. Thus, they could preserve meat and fish for quite some time. This is how the well-known sausages came about!

Canning

Similar methods are those of canning food and turning it into a pickle. The former protects food from the effects of air and is steadily gaining ground as a preservation method for fruit, vegetables and meat. Its main point is the correct sterilization of the storage medium we will use. The second, on the other hand, requires placing the food in brine for a certain time and then transferring it to a container with vinegar.

Freezing

The preservation method that we apply perhaps most often is our favorite freezing. We use it for almost everything, fruits and vegetables, meat and seafood. We simply divide into portions, place in bags or our well-known tapers and put them in the freezer. The best thing is that we can also freeze cooked food after it has completely cooled down, which will save our hands when we don’t have time to cook.

In general, there are many ways we can apply to preserve food. It is enough to find the right one for each type of food and follow it correctly. One way or another, we will always have healthy food in our kitchen and we won’t have to throw anything away!

Pasteurization

The reverse process of freezing is an equally effective and natural food preservation method, pasteurization. It is about the processing of mainly liquid foods and as we have heard a necessary protection measure for our milk. It not only helps in its long-term maintenance but also in the death of microbes that contaminate our food very easily. In our kitchen, we place the pot with the liquid we want to pasteurize for half an hour on the fire, at 63°C.
