The heatwave this summer is a hot breath away. A ten-day period of high temperatures and unbearable heat is coming. What we all definitely want on hot days is not to spend a lot of time in a hot kitchen with burning ovens and pots on the fire, boiling for a long time.

Delicious and light recipes with little or no cooking will fill the lunch table in the heat, to be savored and withstand the hot temperature. But we start initially with smart solutions that will give a shady atmosphere at home and a sense of coolness in the kitchen.

5 secrets for a cool kitchen

I’ll tell you what I do to deal with the heat if I’m in the city and not by the beach on vacation. Many of us cannot avoid the hot summer days in the city because the needs of our work do not allow it.

Because if you are on the island next to the wave under thick shade, then things are simple. However, if the thermometer has passed 40 and the family is waiting for food at noon, then things need a way, not an effort. And I always have clever solutions and cooking secrets for you to deal with summer’s hot lava temperature.

Morning cooking in the heat

I always wake up very early in the early morning when the temperature is still relatively low and organize my kitchen so that everyday cooking on hot summer days is very easy.

For example, I avoid long-time baking in the oven and in the pan. I prefer easy foods that require minimal cooking or preparation.
In other words, a puffed omelette or an omelette with courgettes is also pleasant to eat at room temperature. So you have all the ingredients and in the morning you prepare within 10′ a puffy omelette that you will serve during the day with a country salad. So everyone will be satisfied and most importantly no one will complain.

But before I start any cooking, from early in the morning on hot days, I shade the whole house. I close shutters and curtains keeping all the strong sunlight out and creating a shady cool atmosphere. I lower the awnings and keep the hot sun rays away from the verandas and inside the house.
So in the shadowy atmosphere of the house and especially the kitchen I prepare easy recipes without much preparation and long hours of cooking.

Cool and healthy all day long

Smoothies with vegetables and fruits are ideal to fill you up, quench your thirst and give you energy and well-being at all hours of the day. Starting in the morning with a smoothie for breakfast or for any time of the day. You will discover many tasty combinations.

Heat and lots of vegetables

Now, in the heart of summer and the hot days of the heat wave, is the time to enjoy tender vegetables with easy recipes and minimal preparation. Beans are a good solution because you prepare them late the night before or very early in the morning and serve them at room temperature with feta cheese and bread.

Make a different salad meal every day for the whole family. That is, a pasta salad, rice salad or salad with oatmeal is always the best solution for the heat. A cool bowl of salad in your fridge is nutritious, filling and delicious, ideal for a light meal for the whole family.
You can even make stuffed ones from the night before or even 5-minute stuffed ones with minimal preparation and bake them in the morning before it gets too hot. After all, the best stuffings are the next day stuffings that become doubly delicious when there are a few hours left.

Grilled shrimp with salad is a recipe with minimal cooking and few calories. They have protein, low fat and minimal calories. Seasonal greens, with marinated anchovies or octopus salad are suggestions for a light meal on hot summer days. And if you love fluffy burgers but don’t want to light an oven, here’s a recipe for lemonade burgers that are baked in a pan in just 10 minutes, in a light lemony sauce. An unforgettable taste.

Air fryer

If you have an air fryer at home more than ever now is the time to use it to quickly cook an easy recipe.
The meatballs that are everyone’s favorite food, you will ferment them quickly and keep them in the refrigerator. When it’s time to eat, shape them and without flour bake them for a few minutes in the air fryer. Make a cool tzatziki with seasonal salad and the meal is ready for the family in less than 30 minutes!

What to avoid in my diet in the heat

The heat certainly requires a special diet, with easy-to-digest foods and light recipes to make us feel light. Meals with little or no cooking, lots of vegetables and cool salads are ideal to fill everyone up, without being weighed down and sedated by rich flavors and fatty ingredients. So avoid heavy sauces, lots of fat, fried foods, recipes with a lot of preparation and long hours of cooking. Be patient, the heat will pass.
