Gurumê means gourmet in Japanese. But don’t expect haute cuisine at the restaurant that has just opened in Baixo Pinheiros, between Teus and Votre, on Natingui Street. This is the first São Paulo branch of the Rio brand, which is completing 10 years and already has nine locations.

Not being gastronomic, however, doesn’t mean you’ll eat badly there. By knowing how to ask, the chances of leaving satisfied are great. To avoid making mistakes, if I were you, I would avoid the pesto, which is found in several sections of the menu, starting with the most famous starter: tuna with burrata, pesto, bread crumbs and parmigiano. What a mistake. The pesto covers up the delicacy of the tuna, the parmigiano gives it an unnecessary Italian accent in this case. And the burrata… who can still handle it?

On the other hand, the shrimp popcorn is a great way to start the meal (R$47, per portion): they are large, tender shrimp, cut into pieces, breaded in delicate tempura and fried. Fresh, dry, they arrive with a spicy sauce on the side – and they’ve been calling me back to the restaurant since we were introduced last week…

Traditional sushi and sashimi are good, well made with fresh fish. And there are interesting options in the delicacies section: wagyu tataki with ponzu sauce (R$59), wagyu nigiri torched with fleur de sel and lemon drops (R$49), uni (R64), eel sushi (R$65 , the duo). And there’s bluefin tuna: sushi and sashimi from different parts, with different prices.

For those who love inventions, there is no shortage of options, such as the tuna pesto roll, tomato pesto roll and the popcorn roll, a combination of smoked salmon, shrimp tempura, cream cheese and pepper jelly. Between others.

I confess that I didn’t waste time with them, after the starters, I went straight to the nasi goreng shrimp (R$75), a great version of Indonesian fried rice, which combines jasmine rice in Indian curry with shrimp, egg, cherry tomatoes, lemon and chestnuts . Delicious, slightly spicy. The portion is large, perfect for sharing. Among the hot dishes, there is also pork ramen (R$62), in which the fresh noodles are served in chicken and vegetable broth seasoned with miso and the pork belly is marinated before being slowly cooked. To top it off, a perfect egg, red onion, nori and chives.

I was happy at Gurumê, escaping the inventions. But the, let’s say, unorthodox dishes are the ones that are successful there. The restaurant opened less than two weeks ago and is already booming…Ah, the place is beautiful, designed by Tiago Bernardes, with high ceilings and lots of natural light.
