- Red cabbage: Red cabbage is often associated with the cold season. In fact, the vegetables are in season from June and are grown locally until November. In all other months you can get red cabbage as a stock item.
- Apple: Here I like to use sour-sweet varieties such as Cox Orange, Elstar and Co.
- Honey, rapeseed oil and apple cider vinegar: This combination results in the simple 3-ingredient dressing for the red cabbage salad, which is kneaded directly into the vegetable strips.
- Salt and pepper: This is added to the flavor at the end.
If you want, you can also vary and spice up my classic version with other ingredients. I do that every now and then when I want to add some variety. In this case I exchange the apple for red grapes or grated carrot. Also delicious: a combination with Spring onions, walnut kernels and Feta. Here you can decide according to your taste.

Prepare red cabbage salad in the classic way – 3 steps

- Cut and knead red cabbage. Fine strips are best for the salad. Then salt the strips and knead them vigorously with your hands. Best for 5 minutes until the juice comes out. This gives the cabbage a softer consistency and makes it easier to digest. My tip: Use disposable gloves because red cabbage stains badly.
- Knead the red cabbage with the dressing ingredients. I simply add them to the cabbage and knead them again with the red cabbage strips. Then add the apple shavings.
- Let the red cabbage salad sit. This ensures that the flavors can develop better and the cabbage strips become softer.
By the way, you can also use the relative Eat pointed cabbage raw. This has a mild taste and can also be easily made into pointed cabbage salad. Definitely try it!
