Plums – recipes and tips

Plums are popular summer fruits and a classic for a delicious sheet cake. Whether preserved, baked or fried – plums can be used to conjure up wonderful desserts, cakes and sweet and savory dishes.

Recipes with plums

Plums are full of vitamins and minerals. Their fruity, aromatic taste gives numerous dishes a wonderfully sweet and sour kick.

Recipe classic: plum cake

Kitchen tips for plums

The popular fruits are elongated-oval, their whitish protective layer is more pronounced than other plum varieties and their flesh is slightly firmer.

Tips for buying plums:
You can’t go wrong when buying plums:

  • Buy shiny and firm fruits.
  • Make sure that the fruits are no longer greenish, as they only ripen a little.
  • The style base should be plump and have no wrinkles.
  • Do not buy overripe fruit.

When you get home, you should store the plums in a paper bag in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. It is important that you wash off the white wax layer shortly before eating, as it protects the fruit from drying out.

Plum kitchen tips
Dark purple and sweet, plums taste best straight from the tree. Due to their sweet aroma, they can also be easily processed into puree, compote or jam. As a thick puree – Austrian “Powidl” and southern German “Latwerge” – plums accompany sweet main dishes such as Sweet dumplings or Quarktaler.
Plums also add a special touch to hearty game dishes, such as venison steaks with plum sauce or duck breast with plum chutney.
The classic plum
recipe is the plum cake from the tin. Its base stays nice and crispy because the fruit only loses a little juice.
If you have an abundance of plums, you can easily freeze them. Simply remove the stones and put the fruit in a freezer bag in the freezer. To prevent them from sticking together, you can also pre-freeze them briefly on a tray, then put them in a bag and freeze.

Plums are so healthy
Not only are they delicious – plums are also very healthy. With vitamins C, A and E, they strengthen our immune system and protect us from diseases. They also contain B vitamins and stimulate our digestion.
