The original recipe for porridge only calls for a few simple ingredients:
- Oat flakes (coarse or fine) or oat flour
- Water, milk or plant drink

Refine porridge
Today we like to prepare the porridge with other delicious ingredients. Whereas in the past it was customary to serve the porridge plain and add other ingredients individually so that everyone could help themselves.

- Nuts, seeds or kernels give the breakfast porridge a crunchy component.
- The porridge can be spiced up even further with various spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla or even cocoa.
- In Scotland, porridge is also often prepared hearty and seasoned with a pinch of salt. But porridge also tastes delicious when combined with other ingredients such as tomatoes, fried mushrooms, avocado, spinach or a fried egg.
Tip:
If some porridge remains, that’s no problem at all: the finished porridge can simply be stored in the refrigerator. The next day, warm it up in a pot with a little water or milk. Porridge also tastes very good cold, e.g. B. with cinnamon sugar or applesauce.
Why is porridge so healthy?
It’s not without reason that porridge is so popular with the British. The rich porridge keeps you full for a long time thanks to the fiber and carbohydrates it contains and provides valuable proteins and vitamins thanks to the oats.
