The ingredients for my potato and kohlrabi casserole
Potatoes and kohlrabi in a creamy sauce with a melting cheese topping – sounds good, right? It is too! My family and I like the potato and kohlrabi gratin so much that I have cooked it several times now. The feel-good weight is child’s play and made with just a few ingredients. What is needed are these candidates:
- potatoes: It’s best to use waxy or predominantly waxy potatoes. These varieties retain their bite and don’t fall apart.
- Kohlrabi: You can get the vegetables in the supermarket all year round. In summer there is locally grown kohlrabi.
- Onion and Garlic: A vegetable onion and fresh garlic add a lot of spice.
- Cream cheese and cream: These two ingredients form the basis for the creamy sauce for my kohlrabi and potato casserole.
- Salt, pepper and nutmeg: 3 spices, nothing more is needed. The whole thing is seasoned with salt, pepper and nutmeg.
- Grated cheese: Here you can take your favorite variety. Whether Gouda, Emmental or mountain cheese – it’s up to you.
By the way, you can also spice up the casserole with other ingredients. If you like, you can add bacon or minced meat, similar to my kohlrabi minced meat casserole.

Prepare kohlrabi casserole with potatoes in 3 steps
So that potatoes and kohlrabi cook faster in the oven, I pre-cook the vegetables. Then everything goes into a baking dish and can disappear in the oven. Totally simple. As always, you can find the exact quantities further down in my recipe card. I’ll show you how to prepare the potato casserole with kohlrabi here.
- Prepare vegetables. I chop the onion and garlic very finely. Potatoes and kohlrabi are peeled and diced. The smaller the pieces, the faster the vegetables will cook. I cut the vegetables into bite-sized cubes.
- Mix the sauce. Take a bowl large enough so that you can mix everything well and nothing goes wrong.
- Bake potato and kohlrabi casserole in the oven. Mix the pre-cooked vegetables with the sauce and cover everything with cheese. Then your oven takes over.
Be sure to try my simple kohlrabi and carrot vegetables. This is also super creamy and delicious.
