My Potato and minced meat casserole is really easy to do and Ready for oven in just 30 minutes. The casserole with potatoes and minced meat sauce really tastes like childhood and is a real classic in our house.

The ingredients for my potato and minced meat casserole

Simple, hearty and delicious is the best way to describe my potato and minced meat casserole. The casserole combines potatoes and minced meat with a creamy sauce and is perfect for anyone who likes uncomplicated home cooking. And here are the ingredients:

  • potatoes: I prefer to use mainly waxy potatoes, but you can also use a floury variety as an alternative. However, I advise against waxy ones for this dish because they would not become soft in the time specified.
  • minced meat: Here I use lean, organic ground beef.
  • Onion and Garlic: The duo provides a delicious seasoning.
  • Cream, vegetable broth and tomato paste: The three ingredients together form the basis for the creamy sauce.
  • Grated cheese: Which variety you choose is purely a matter of taste. I like Gouda, Emmental or a mixed gratin cheese for gratinating.
  • Spices: Here I use salt, pepper and Italian herbs from the frozen food compartment. These contain parsley, oregano, basil and thyme.

3 tips for the potato and minced meat casserole

To make potato casserole with minced meat easy and really tasty, I have 3 tips for you:

  1. The Thicken the sauce. So that the sauce is not runny after baking, I always stir a little flour into the minced meat sauce. This binds the liquid and ensures a creamy consistency.
  2. Pre-cook potatoes in the sauce. I pre-cook the potato slices in the minced meat sauce for 5 minutes. This way they cook evenly and the casserole is ready quicker.
  3. Slice potatoes thinly. I cut my potatoes into very thin slices with the vegetable slicer. This way they absorb the full flavor of the sauce and cook faster.

  • Chop onions and garlic finely. Peel the potatoes and cut them into very thin slices with a vegetable slicer.

    1 onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 1kg potatoes

  • Heat olive oil in a large pan and fry the minced meat. Add onions and garlic and fry briefly. Fold in the tomato paste and roast. Then fold in the flour.

    1 tbsp olive oil, 500 g minced beef, 2 tbsp tomato paste, 1 tbsp flour

  • Add the cream, vegetable stock and the potato slices, bring to the boil and simmer, covered, over medium heat for 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and fold in the herbs.

    400 ml vegetable broth, 200 g cream for cooking, 2 tbsp Italian herbs, Salt, pepper

  • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees top and bottom heat.

  • Put the potatoes and the sauce in the baking dish and sprinkle with grated cheese. Bake for about 40 minutes. If the cheese gets too dark, simply cover the casserole with aluminum foil.
