You already have Red cabbage steaks tried? This is the best discovery I’ve made recently. In my version, I prepare the red cabbage in the oven – here with an orange marinade and feta on top. I’ll show you how easy it is to prepare the delicious red cabbage steaks in my recipe.

The ingredients for my red cabbage steaks

A side dish really couldn’t be simpler or tastier. If you haven’t had a taste for red cabbage steaks yet, you should definitely try my recipe. The red cabbage can be prepared in so many different ways in the kitchen and this version is convincing across the board. The ingredients for the dish come together quickly.

  • Red cabbage: From June to November you can get fresh red cabbage from local cultivation. In all other months the vegetables are offered as stored goods.
  • oil and orange juice: The base for my marinade consists of mild olive oil and orange juice. Alternatively, you can also use lemon juice. This combination not only tastes delicious, but also makes the cabbage a little softer during preparation.
  • Garlic: Be sure to use fresh garlic here because it tastes more intense.
  • Honey: The honey adds some sweetness to the marinade and ensures that the vegetables are slightly caramelized in the oven.
  • Salt and pepper: Two spices – that’s all you need. I use this to season the marinade for the red cabbage steaks.
  • Feta: The cheese is used as a topping and brings a spicy, salty note. If you like it a little milder, you can use shepherd’s cheese. We will explain the difference between feta, shepherd’s cheese and sheep’s cheese in another article.

By the way, you can vary the toppings for your red cabbage to suit your taste. Don’t like walnuts or feta? Then give it a try hazelnuts and Goat cheese instead. Also delicious: Chili powder, red grapes, Pomegranate seeds and fresh herbs such as thyme or rosemary.

Preparing red cabbage in the oven – it’s that easy

Simply cut red cabbage into slices, brush with marinade and cook in the oven – the recipe really couldn’t be easier. As always, you can find the exact quantities below in my recipe card. Here and now I’ll show you the few preparation steps in detail.

  1. Cut red cabbage into “steaks”.. It is best to cut the vegetables into slices 1 cm thick.
  2. Mix the marinade. Simply mix all the ingredients together and spread on the red cabbage.
  3. Cook red cabbage in the oven. After 20 minutes, the feta is added to the slices as a topping. The slices then disappear into the oven for another 15 minutes.

We really like to combine the red cabbage with mashed potatoes or grandma’s potato dumplings. Of course, the cabbage steaks also go great as a side dish with goulash, roasts, etc.
